Using Scavenger Hunts

Description: Each Scavenger Hunt is keyed to a particular U.S. History Standard Benchmark published by UCLA's National Center for History in the Schools. Using a Scavenger Hunt can save teachers time and effort in meeting standards requirements, while engaging students in discovering the past.

Using a Scavenger Hunt requires 4 basic steps.

1. Find an existing Scavenger Hunt Lesson, or create a new Scavenger Hunt Lesson. Journey Back In Time has indexed hundreds of articles with Standard Benchmarks and so you can easily review articles to create a Scavenger Hunt Lesson questionnaire to fulfill a standard's requirements.



2. Create a Lesson Assignment from the Lesson selected. The Assignment will have a unique Lesson Number and grades will be calculated for those participating in the Assignment. When creating the Assignment teachers can trim the size of the questionnaire by selecting which questions to use from the Lesson.



3. Direct students to login to the Assignment and complete the questionnaire. The relevant newspaper article or document PDF file, and text version if available, is linked to each question. Students will need to read and comprehend the article/document to determine which answer is correct for each question.



4. Assignments are automatically graded. Teachers can login to their Assignment to print a recap of students and grades, and also print out each student's questionnaire.

Students can complete a questionnaire over multiple login sessions. Students will therefore need to submit a password so they can login to the Assignment on subsequent visits. If your school assigns a username and password to students for accessing your school's network, advise students to use that password since they already know and use it. Since Journey Back In Time does not request their matching network username it is safe for them to user that network password here.
